Heat Pump Sizing Science: How We Engineer Every Install
Any contractor can drop a heat pump in. Getting it right means understanding heat load, HSPF2, cold-climate performance and proper sizing before the order goes in. Here's the engineering behind every Coquitlam install we do.
Manual J Heat Load Calculation
Before we recommend a unit, we calculate your home's exact heating and cooling load — accounting for floor area, ceiling height, insulation R-values, window area and orientation, air leakage rate, and your local climate data. An oversized heat pump short-cycles, wears out fast and leaves rooms clammy. An undersized one runs flat out on cold nights. Manual J sizing is how we get it right.
HSPF2 — Heating Seasonal Performance Factor
HSPF2 measures how much heat a system delivers per unit of electricity consumed over an entire heating season under real-world climate conditions. The minimum qualifying HSPF2 for CleanBC rebates is around 7.1. The systems we install typically run 9.5–14.0 HSPF2 — meaning you get 9–14 BTUs of heat for every BTU of electricity used. That's 3–4× more efficient than electric baseboards.
SEER2 — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
SEER2 is the cooling equivalent of HSPF2 — it measures air conditioner efficiency over a full cooling season. Higher is better. Our recommended systems run 18–22 SEER2, well above the BC code minimum of 14.3. That matters in Coquitlam summers that now regularly push 35°C and above.
Inverter-Driven Variable-Speed Compressors
Old-school heat pumps run at 100% or 0% — they slam on, reach temperature, shut off, then repeat. Inverter-driven compressors modulate between roughly 20% and 120% of capacity to match the home's actual demand at any moment. The result: lower electricity use, steadier temperatures, quieter operation, and compressors that last longer because they aren't constantly starting under load.
COP — Coefficient of Performance
COP is the ratio of heat output to electrical energy input at a specific outdoor temperature. At +7°C (a mild Coquitlam day), a good heat pump runs COP 3.5–4.5 — meaning 4.5 kWh of heat from 1 kWh of electricity. At −15°C, COP drops to 1.5–2.5 depending on the unit, which is still more efficient than resistance heat. We use COP curves from each brand's engineering data to verify performance in your climate zone.
Cold-Climate Rating & Balance Point
Standard heat pumps lose output below −10°C. Cold-climate units are rated to −25°C or −30°C and maintain meaningful heating capacity down to those temperatures. The 'balance point' is where the heat pump can no longer meet the home's full heating demand — at that temperature, a backup heat source (electric strip heat or a furnace in a dual-fuel setup) takes over. We calculate your home's balance point so the backup is sized correctly.
On refrigerants: Our installs currently use R-32 and R-410A systems. R-32 has a global warming potential (GWP) of 675 — a fraction of the 2,088 GWP of R-410A. As new equipment lines arrive with R-454B (GWP of 466) and R-290 (GWP of 3), we transition to those. Choosing lower-GWP refrigerants is part of doing this work responsibly.
