HSPF2 — Heating Seasonal Performance Factor

HSPF2 measures how much heat a system delivers per unit of electricity consumed over an entire heating season under real-world climate conditions. The minimum qualifying HSPF2 for CleanBC rebates is around 7.1. The systems we install typically run 9.5–14.0 HSPF2 — meaning you get 9–14 BTUs of heat for every BTU of electricity used. That's 3–4× more efficient than electric baseboards.

SEER2 — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

SEER2 is the cooling equivalent of HSPF2 — it measures air conditioner efficiency over a full cooling season. Higher is better. Our recommended systems run 18–22 SEER2, well above the BC code minimum of 14.3. That matters in Coquitlam summers that now regularly push 35°C and above.

COP — Coefficient of Performance

COP is the ratio of heat output to electrical energy input at a specific outdoor temperature. At +7°C (a mild Coquitlam day), a good heat pump runs COP 3.5–4.5 — meaning 4.5 kWh of heat from 1 kWh of electricity. At −15°C, COP drops to 1.5–2.5 depending on the unit, which is still more efficient than resistance heat. Cold-Climate Rating & Balance Point

Standard heat pumps lose output below −10°C. Cold-climate units are rated to −25°C or −30°C and maintain meaningful heating capacity down to those temperatures. The 'balance point' is where the heat pump can no longer meet the home's full heating demand — at that temperature, a backup heat source (electric strip heat or a furnace in a dual-fuel setup) takes over.
